There are songs we hear differently because of the people we love.
This week it was U2’s “I Don’t Wanna See You Smile.”
The title caught me off guard.
At first glance, it sounds almost harsh. Why wouldn’t someone want to see another person smile? But I don’t hear it as wishing someone unhappiness. I hear something closer to this:
Don’t let the smile hide the truth.
Maybe I’m reading too much into it. Maybe the song is about something else entirely—a relationship ending, watching someone move on, or the complicated emotions that come when love changes. Either way, this is where the song found me this week: I thought about the people who smile while carrying things most of us cannot see.
Maybe one of the quiet privileges of love is being trusted with another person’s pain. Not to fix it. Just to be there.
The ones who keep showing up. The ones who find ways to laugh, love, and move forward even when life has taken unexpected turns. Maybe the hardest thing about a smile is that we don’t always know what it is carrying. That thought brought me back to this song.
The line that stayed with me came near the end:
“I will live again.
You will live again.”
For me, those words carry the weight of a promise—not that this life will never break, but that brokenness does not have the final word.
